Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God
This is concerning the timing of Christ’s return. Paul was letting the people know that Christ’s return was not imminent. He assured them that certain events must happen before Christ returns and gathers His elect.
What must happen first?
1. A falling away. (Apostasy) Many will abandon their faith in God and remove Him from their lives. He will be taken out of the way.
2. The man of sin will be revealed. This is the antichrist. The one who sits in the temple and says he is God. Once God is removed from people’s hearts it will be easy for the antichrist to rise to power.
After these things Christ will return and gather His elect.
Let no man deceive you by any means.
