I know this is one of the hardest things for a christian to do. Even for anyone. Even myself. I tend to hold a grudge. Forgiveness is a very important part of being a christian. Christ died for us so that we would be forgiven of all our sin against God. How is it that we find it so hard to forgive others that sin against us?
God created us in His image and in His likeness.
Genesis 1:26-27 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Our Father is very patient and forgiving toward us. He gave His only begotten Son to us as a sacrifice for our unending sins. God knows we can not stop sinning as long as we are in this mortal flesh. But yet, He doesn’t give up on us.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
You know when you have done wrong against God’s word and you ask Him to forgive you. So He does. No matter how awful a sin it was. But someone you know or even don’t know has lied, cheated, stole, murdered, destroyed, or caused other devastation in your life. Have you forgiven them?
Colossians 3:12-13 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.
Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
Luke 6:36-37 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:
Matthew 6:14-15 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Mark 11:25-26 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Matthew 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
God says that even the lest you do to others you have done to Him.
Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
If we want forgiveness from God we must learn to forgive and forget.
Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
It must also be said that while God will forget your sins as long as you walk with Him, if you turn away and continue to sin He will remember your iniquities on judgement day. However, we are to continue to forgive and let God be the one to avenge us.
Romans 12:19-21 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
