Apostasy

2 Thessalonians 2:1-2
Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

2 Thessalonians 2:3
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

This verse is telling us what must take place before Christ returns to gather us to Him.
#1 a falling away happens first
#2 the man of sin is revealed

Two major things will happen before the “rapture”.

This verse was translated from the Greek words:

μή τις ὑμᾶς ἐξαπατήσῃ κατὰ μηδένα τρόπον: ὅτι ἐὰν μὴ ἔλθῃ ἡ ἀποστασία πρῶτον καὶ ἀποκαλυφθῇ ὁ ἄνθρωπος τῆς ἀνομίας, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀπωλείας,(1)

The underlined Greek word is ἀποστασία {ap-os-tas-ee’-ah}. Translated in English as apostasy or, as the KJV translators chose, falling away. English definition is renunciation of a religious faith or abandonment of a previous loyalty.(2)

The falling away is not the removal of the Holy Spirit from earth as some choose to believe. These verses clearly state that we will not be gathered or “raptured” until the antichrist is revealed, which will happen when a great multitude of people choose to leave their faith in Christ.
