Rapture Beliefs

The word rapture is not mentioned in any English bible. We get this word from the Greek word harpagesometha in 1 Thessalonians 4:17 of the Greek new testament. It is from the root word harpazo which means “caught up or carry away“. It was interpreted into Latin as the word raptus meaning “a carrying off“. In the Latin Vulgate it is rapiemur which means “to catch up or taken away“. The English word for this is rapture.

There are a few different views about the timing of the rapture. I have here the two main ones. While the belief of the timing is not directly a salvation necessity, it is still very important to understand the dangers of believing and preparing for the wrong one. I myself lean to only one of these beliefs. I tried to make this fair and from the viewpoint of the believer as to give you a chance to choose for yourself.

It is also very important to familiarize yourself with what the rapture is because the time is fast approaching and you need to be prepared in which ever view you choose. May God bless you with knowledge and open your eyes, heart, and mind to truth.

The Pre-tribulation Belief (Most popular belief taught in churches, books, and movies)

(1) Jesus will return to gather His elect (believers), both living and dead. They will meet in the air and Jesus will take them to heaven before the (2) great tribulation when the antichrist signs a 7 year peace treaty with Israel. After 3 ½ years the antichrist will break the treaty with Israel and sit in the Jewish Temple as God. (3) During this time the elect will partake in the marriage supper in heaven with Christ while God begins His wrath on the earth. (4) The wrath of God is the seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven vials.

The people left behind will have to go through the worst events to ever happen on earth. (5) Some will repent of their sins and risk being martyred for their belief. Anyone who takes the mark of the beast can not be saved.

(6) After the 7 years Christ will return with His angels and His elect to battle the antichrist. Once the antichrist is defeated and thrown into hell (the bottomless pit) with all the unbelievers, (7) Jesus will begin His 1000 year reign on earth with His elect and the tribulation saints reigning as well. (8) The tribulation saints, those that repent during the tribulation, will continue to marry and reproduce but, (9) the saints that were raptured before will not do either.

(10) After the 1000 year reign, Satan will be loosed from hell and deceive the generation of the tribulation saints. They will come against Jesus and His elect, failing, and Satan and his followers will be thrown into the lake of fire along with death and hell.

(11) Christ will return at any moment to gather His elect. No one knows the day or the hour it will happen. (12) You must be saved and ready so that day does not take you as a thief in the night.

Scripture References:
(1a) 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.

(1b) 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

(2a) Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

(2b) 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

(3a) Luke 12:36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

(3b) Revelation 19:7-9 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.

(5) Revelation 20:4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

(12) 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3 But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

The Post-tribulation Belief

We will all go through the tribulation with God protecting and helping us through it. (1) Some will seek God and repent during the tribulation. (2) Jesus will return once at the end of the tribulation with His angels to (3) gather (rapture) His elect, dead first, then those still alive, to meet in the air and (4) we will all go to battle against the antichrist. (5) The marriage supper will be one earth. (6) God’s wrath on earth begins after the rapture with the 7 vials. (7) Those that received the mark will not be spared. (8) However, there will be a remnant that will turn to God and be spared after the rapture.

(9) After the antichrist is defeated, Jesus will begin His 1000 year reign on earth with His elect and the tribulation saints. (10) Satan and his followers will be thrown into the bottomless pit. (11) After the 1000 years Satan and his follows are freed and they come together to fight against Christ and His elect, failing, and they are thrown into the lake of fire along with death and hell.

(12) Jesus gave us many signs to watch for so that day will not take us as a thief in the night. (13) Put on your whole armour and be ready.

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Mid-tribulation Belief

The rapture will happen when the antichrist breaks the 7 year treaty at 3 ½ years. The rest follows a pre-tribulation belief.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Pre-tribulation Summary: The whole 7 year tribulation is the wrath of God. It will be God’s way of proving His existence when thousands of people suddenly vanish. Believers in Christ are not appointed to wrath so we will be raptured before it begins. No one knows the day or the hour. A Post-tribulation theory leads one to believe that we will know when Christ returns since the theory says He will return at the end of the 7 year tribulation. A Post-tribulation theory also leaves no one to populate during the 1000 years since it says all saints are resurrected in which they can not reproduce. There are no signs to watch for since Jesus’ return is imminent.
Some believe the Holy Spirit will be removed when we are raptured and some believe that it will stay on earth.
Post-tribulation Summary: Jesus will return once to gather His elect and pour out His wrath in battle on the same day. It will be just as the days of Noah and Lot. A pre-tribulation belief says He will return twice 7 years apart. We will all go through the tribulation which is Satan’s wrath with the protection of God and saved from God’s wrath at the end of the tribulation by the rapture. No one knows the day or hour because it can change at any time if we repent and turn to God before it begins. During God’s wrath there will be a remnant that God spares from His heritage that will enter the millennial kingdom to repopulate. Jesus gave us many signs to watch for so we would be prepared and recognize when the day arrives so, we don’t fall victim to the false prophets and christs, and to remind us of the blessed return to come. Keep our faith and patience through the troublous times ahead when Satan tests us with his wrath.
The Holy Spirit will remain on earth because the bible says it will remain until the end of the world.
Hopefully you have an understanding of these views and maybe even made a choice. I know this does not go into great detail of the events to come. I do have many studies on this blog site about this topic because I see it as a very important issue and ultimately a salvation one. It is the message I have been called upon to give to God’s people.
One of these beliefs do not believe that God will protected them while they are still on earth. One of these believe Jesus spoke in vain about signs. One of these beliefs may fall prey to a false christ. One of these beliefs may lose faith if the timing doesn’t happen when they think it will. One of these beliefs will cause non-believers to wait and see if thousands of people disappear first before they even decide to believe in God. One of these beliefs will not be spiritually strong enough to endure. Lose your faith or take the hand of the wrong christ and your salvation is gone. The bible speaks of a great falling away and those that depart from the faith in latter times. Which one do you believe?
Just a little note because I know the hard heartedness of people. I know for fact that both beliefs will have those that fall away. However, one belief does have a greater chance of doing so. God does not want us to believe fairytales and fables that are pleasing to the ear. He wants us to trust in Him in all things. Without Him we can do nothing. With Him we will stand strong and endure all things. Even the great tribulation.
DO NOT wait until thousands of people disappear or the signs to begin before you believe and give your life to Christ. You may die any second and never have another chance to do so. It will be too late for you. Do it right now. Ask God to forgive your sins. Confess that Christ came in the flesh and died for your sins and rose again the third day defeating death. Ask Him to come into your life and make you a new person in Jesus name. He is there, listening, watching, and waiting for you to come to Him.
