A Peculiar People

1 Peter 2:7-10 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
Deuteronomy 14:2 For thou art an holy people unto the Lord thy God, and the Lord hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.
Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
Exodus 19:5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:
What is a “peculiar people”?

Peculiar means:
1. characteristic of only one person, group, or thing
2. different from the usual or normal
Middle English peculier, from Latin peculiaris of private property, special, from peculium private property

You are the private property of God.

1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Nowadays the most common meaning of peculiar is to be strange or different. As christians we are suppose to be different from the world and not conformed to the so called normal ways that others follow or do. As true christians we do not belong to this world.

John 15:18-21 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

John 17:14-17 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

We are not of this world, or the traditions of men.

Colossians 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Speaking of the traditions of men, we have just gone through the popular tradition of halloween. I know I am not the only christian who does not participate in this abomination. I was attacked more this year for my beliefs than in any previous year. Incredible times we are living in. One person even asked me if I was sacrilegious. Seriously? Another asked me why I wasn’t dressed up at work like the others. I told him it was against my religion. He asked what my religion was and I told him I was a christian. He said, “Those wacky christians”. I was made fun of, told I was wrong, and basically ignored by those in costume at work. It’s interesting because in this world strange, different, and unusual people get treated this way. If you are not one of them, you are weird, an outcast like on a childhood playground when someone said you had “cooties”. It was like I had offended them by not playing along. One person even told me that “halloween is just good fun. Nothing to do with God”. The difference between these people and a peculiar people? To a peculiar people, everything has to do with God. Everything.

Those whom are conformed to this world and it’s traditions are being deceived.

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Ephesians 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

2 Timothy 2:24-26 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
So what does it mean to be a peculiar people?

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

A peculiar people knows they do not deserve the mercy of God. They know their hearts are full of wickedness. They know the word of God and try to live their lives by it. They have done wrong in the past or perhaps still do something they know is not right by the word but, they are trying to overcome those wrongs. What is the biggest difference between the world and a peculiar people? A peculiar people recognizes the wrong in their lives and by the grace of God will one day overcome them. Without God we live in our sins and that is how we will die. We understand what is sin and try to avoid it because we know that the temptation is strong.

1 John 5:18-20 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

A peculiar people is not self-righteous. Self-righteous people have been made righteous by their own eyes. Recognizing only others sins and not acknowledging their own. A peculiar people has been made righteous by Jesus Christ. Recognizing others sins through their own and they try to help the lost by sharing their testimony. They judge the sin, not the sinner because they know they have been sinners and change through Jesus Christ is possible. We love people enough to warn them against what we have done. We try to warn them with the word of God.

A peculiar people shares this understanding with those whom have an ear to listen. The world has a strong willpower to do whatever it wants. Often times it is not easy to get anyone to listen. The lusts of this world for “fun” whether it be cheating on a spouse, staying out past curfew, teenage sex, drinking at a party, or even halloween, has too great of a hold on them. This halloween I was also told that nowhere in the bible does it say we can’t have fun. This is true, however, some ideas of fun are not God’s ideas. You know the old saying “Its all fun and games until…”.

Matthew 7:17-23 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Jesus is coming back and very soon. What will He say to you? Are you a peculiar people or conformed to this world and it’s “fun”?

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
